Data silo

Definition

A data silo is a store of information held inside one team or tool in a way that other parts of the business cannot readily use.

Silos are usually a side effect of buying software per function. The support tool holds support history, the finance tool holds payment history, and the question that needs both, such as whether an unhappy customer is also an unpaid one, has no home.
