Data migration

Definition

Data migration is the process of moving records from one system into another, mapping each field in the source onto a field in the destination.

The hard part is not moving the rows, it is deciding what each field means. Migration usually fails on the ambiguous fields, the custom properties somebody added in 2021 and the records that break the rules the schema assumes.
