Definition

Total cost of ownership is the full cost of running a system over its life, including licences, implementation, integration, administration and the staff time it consumes.

For business software the licence is often the smaller half. Implementation, the person who maintains the integrations, and the hours spent reconciling two systems are real costs that never appear on the invoice.
